I tried. I tried searching the internet, asked the elders in my family and all of them had no specific or direct answers.
See, I knew about this issue whilst shopping for shoes with Linnie several months ago. She was the one who warned me to look out for the source for shoe linings, because some might come from pigskin. Now the very naive and seemingly wherehaveibeenallthesewhile attitude, I took her advice seriously but was not quite bothered about it. Until several days ago.
Now I know what I'm supposed to look out for, according to LInnie, but I wanted solid proof. Because such things should be written in signs, in the shoe stores to warn potential Muslim customers about their infamous linings. I looked for answers on the Internet, couldn't find any. But I did find a whole lot of shoes, bags, children's clothes, gloves, straps and even book bindings made out of pig's skin. In case you do not know what to look out for, pigskin is distinctively distinguished by three dots in a triangular-like pattern all over the lining. Something like this:

If you see dots in the linings and each set of 3 dots form like a triangle, and these form a pattern all over the lining, chances are, it is pigskin. I was quite amazed that a lot of shoes from famous boutiques in Singapore contain pigskin linings.
I remembered Linnie trying to state her point to a salesperson, that the shop should display signs of pigskin linings for their shoes for Muslim customers. However, I'm really now quite bothered thinking about her answer - a simple, 'Oh, I didn't know myself'.
Blardy hell, not knowing is not an excuse. I believe that as a seller, you're responsible for the products you're selling and also for the customers you're selling to. And we live in Singapore, need I say more? SHould I say more?
I saw a Malay mother supervising her daughter, who was trying on a pair of shoes (flats, to be exact) at a famous boutique recently. I've just inspected the flats on display, and some had pigskin lining. I was just worried about the pair of flats on the daughter's feet but I had to go off before I had a chance to say anything.
I really should do more research on this. LIke whether there are any other ways to distinguish pigskin linings from other linings? Like, how aware is the Muslim community on this issue?
Did YOU know?
play it softly, so gently♥
